Theater Bites

Theater Bites is a collection of thoughts and musings on the subjects of theater, art and faith. Hopefully they will cause discussion and thought, so enjoy Thank you for using ChristianActors.org!

A Clean Script Is A Bad Script!

What does your script look like after the show is over? I'll tell you how I hope it should look. It should be a mess! What do I mean? When you study for a test, hopefully you have pages of notes. When you want to remember something, usually it gets written down. A script is the study guide for your character.

Any actor who only writes down their blocking is doing themselves a dis-service. I would suggest to you that, after the show is over, your script should be covered in notes. Write down everything that applies to your character.

Anything and everything!

Write down motivations, feelings, thoughts, suggestions, thought processes, past history, offstage life and, of course, your blocking!;)

As you know, developing a character is a process, and taking notes about that process will aid you in remembering where you have gone along that road. Besides, you have enough remember, what with all those lines!

So make the process easier on yourself and write down everything that comes to you concerning your character. It will prove it's value in the end.
